Ecolab Textile Care division has developed new, ecofriendly\u00a0washing solutions for industrial laundries that\u00a0\u00a0help to keep total costs under control and improve the\u00a0operative efficiency at the same time: OxyGuard™40\u00a0and Perfomance™ Industrial.
\n\"\"A part of washing processes optimization that Ecolab\u00a0offers to their clients consists of providing solutions\u00a0that aim at the reduction of costs relative to the re-washed linen as a consequence to the presence of\u00a0\u201cspecial\u201d and difficult stains such as those caused by\u00a0sunscreen creams.
\nThis type of stains usually requires the use of high dosages\u00a0of detergents and surfactant boosters, sometimes\u00a0also solvent based, with high solvent content\u00a0(more than 60%). Many cosmetics and sunscreen products indicate a\u00a0specific value relative to sun protection which is also\u00a0called SPF. The number defines the degree of skin protection\u00a0from actinic damage, especially from UVB rays\u00a0if compared to a non-protected skin. \nAccording to CE n.1223\/2009 regulation dated 30 November\u00a02009 and relative to cosmetics, the UV filters\u00a0are \u201csubstances destined exclusively or mainly to protect\u00a0the skin from UV radiation by absorption, reflection\u00a0or scattering of the UV radiation\u201d. Sunblock can\u00a0be divided into physical and chemical type. It reduces\u00a0the quantity of light radiation on the area where the\u00a0sunscreen has been applied\u00a0 Chemical sunblock contains organic molecules able\u00a0to absorb and decompose UV radiation, which is less\u00a0harmful for our skin. It has been classified as UV-A and\u00a0UV-B according to the length of the maximum absorption\u00a0(Cinnamate, Salicylate, Benzophenone, Dibenzoylmethane\u00a0derivatives).<\/p>\n

\"\"Physical sunscreens reflect the sun rays therefore\u00a0they cannot reach the skin but, unlike the chemical
\nones, they do not keep the heat nor penetrate the\u00a0skin. They stay on the surface of the skin and let a
\nvery limited quantity of UV rays pass through. We\u00a0can distinguish: TiO2 (titanium dioxide) ZnO (zinc
\noxide), talc, kaolin. These are all substances that allow\u00a0to obtain high SPF and the protection from UVA
\nand UVB.
\n\"\"Physical sunscreens are characterized by a strong\u00a0protective, covering, reflecting and scattering power.
\nThey are not soluble, they are finely scattered and kept\u00a0in suspension in the cream or a cosmetic product.<\/p>\n

\"\"Both the physical and chemical sunscreen types contribute\u00a0to the nature of stains produced on the garments\u00a0by sunscreen creams.
\nWashing a fabric stained by a cosmetic product or a sunscreen\u00a0cream requires to set the washing procedure by\u00a0adopting certain and precise solutions. Otherwise, the fabric\u00a0could remain stained even after it was washed. The\u00a0stains could become colored, e.g. from yellow to pink\u00a0and\u00a0orange.<\/p>\n

\"\"All the washing process conditions (pH, temperature,\u00a0type of bleach, detergent, alkaline or surfactant boosters)\u00a0 are crucial for the control of oxidation reaction that can\u00a0arise in case of the presence of the molecules in the sunscreen:\u00a0the result is the presence of stains on fabrics. The\u00a0stains are often impossible or very difficult to remove.
\nSome ingredients react, especially if activated by UV\u00a0rays or heat, by forming proper chromophores that are\u00a0usually yellow pigments. The problem of stains can,\u00a0therefore, be connected to the stability or the photo\u00a0reaction of sunscreen: a system that mainly absorbs\u00a0UV rays also starts to absorb visible blue light as a\u00a0consequence to chemical reactions during washing\u00a0processes, until the stains become yellow. Many ingredients\u00a0that appear white or transparent can turn into\u00a0strong yellow or brownish as a reaction, often boosted\u00a0by UV light, especially if certain types of metals are present,\u00a0e.g. iron found in water used for washing or showers.
\nOne of the most common reactions concerns\u00a0Avobenzone (INCI: ButylMethoxydibenzoylmethane), a
\nsunblock used for UVA: it is particularly unstable and\u00a0small traces of metals such as zinc oxide and titanium,\u00a0iron Fe2+ or Fe3+ found in water are enough for it to\u00a0link and form complexes that won\u2019t filter UV rays any\u00a0longer but dye the textiles yellow and red instead.
\nThe interaction of sunscreen products with the active\u00a0elements of washing processes is particularly complex\u00a0due to the fact that it is not only the filters described\u00a0above that influence the final \u201cyellow\u201d effect but the\u00a0cream itself with its \u201cgrease\u201d part.<\/p>\n
