In general terms, the rubbing causes fibers to be released from the weave and rise to the surface where they get tangled with others forming knots that become pills as they grow larger.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/2-foto-438_IL-PILLING.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2895\" alt=\"2 foto 438_IL PILLING\" src=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/2-foto-438_IL-PILLING-300x295.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe propensity of a fabric to form pills is strictly tied to:<br \/>\nfiber composition<br \/>\naverage length of the fibers<br \/>\ntype of yarn (gauge and number of twists)<br \/>\nweave coverage factor<br \/>\ntreatments and finishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 How pilling is measured<br \/>\nThe degree of pilling of a fabric is measured on a scale from 1 (worse result) to 5 (best result) using mid-way points. The pilling value is assigned considering the number and size of the pills, fuzz on the surface of the fabric and its general change in appearance.<br \/>\n\u2022 How pilling propensity is determined<br \/>\nLabs can use two different instruments to assess the pilling propensity of a fabric. The results obtained with each of the two can differ due to their exercising a different type of rubbing action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/foto-3-pilling-IL-PILLING.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2897 aligncenter\" alt=\"foto 3 pilling IL PILLING\" src=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/foto-3-pilling-IL-PILLING-300x106.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"106\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n1. Martindale Wear and Abrasion Tester (according to UNI EN ISO 12945-2 and ASTM D4970 standards)<br \/>\nThis instrument makes each of the 6 stations undergo a specific rotation cycle by which areas of the fabric are made to rub against each other with even force.<br \/>\nThe result is then evaluated after a suitable number of rubbing cycles (usually ranging from 1,000 to 7,000 cycles). This instrument simulates localized wear, akin to that undergone by the armpits and sides of a garment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/foto-4-438_IL-PILLING_1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2898 aligncenter\" alt=\"foto 4  438_IL PILLING_1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.staging.detergo.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/foto-4-438_IL-PILLING_1-300x88.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n2.
