Joint venture between hawo and Surfchimica

As a family-run, medium-sized company, hawo has been developing and producing sealing devices and packaging systems for almost 50 years – and since 2020, with ORGANIXtex by hawo, also offers the first 100% biodegradable consumable for the industry.
A pioneer and a market leader in the field of the packaging systems, hawo company based in Germany, has been paying for many years a special attention to the sustainability in the development of its products. Christian Wolf, the Managing Director of the company, is highly committed to reducing the use of plastics: “the responsibility is one of our natural resources. This also includes the conscious use of valuable raw materials.
At hawo, we are trying to implement this in our daily activities, both in our own company and in the development of our products, as well”. The result is an innovative, holistic concept for the textile packaging: the new ORGANIXtex system.
The most important component of this new system is the sustainable ORGANIXtex packaging material. Like traditional plastic covers, it reliably protects the cleaned garments from wind and bad weather and also to a certain extent from germs, especially during the current pandemic. With the new ORGANIXtex packaging material by hawo, the consumers have now an easy way to make a conscious decision to use less plastic in their daily lives.
The new , thermoplastic BIO granules and is therefore 100% plastic-free. Neither forests are being cleared, nor the monocultures are cultivated for its production. There are used only natural raw materials, that are left as a waste product elsewhere, making ORGANIXtex 100% compostable at home. By using regionally produced potato peel starch as the unique raw material for ORGANIXtex, the transport distances are minimized and the CO2 emissions are significantly reduced.

Energy from fossil fuels is completely avoided and the production is almost exclusively made with solar energy (the additionally required electricity is 100% ecological). This means that the production of ORGANIXtex does not release CO2. The ORGANIXtex system is completed by the ORGANIX 630 KST sealing device adapted to the new material. With this stand-alone unit, the length of the packaging can be adapted exactly to the garment that needs to be packaged. Too long or too short packages belong to the past – another important contribution to the conscious use of packaging in the textile industry.

In addition, the ORGANIXtex packaging material is compatible with many fully and semi-automatic packaging machines of the main manufacturers. For this extraordinary concept, hawo received the German Innovation Award shortly after the product launch. The innovation rewards the cross-sector products and solutions that are standing out above all for their user-centricity and added value compared to the previous solutions. The reason: innovations that shape the future and that improve lives, are existing in all sectors. Sometimes you see them at first glance – but often not.

Tradition, innovation and sustainability are the fundamental values of the globally active company. Christian Wolf is well aware that innovative and revolutionary concepts can only be supported by partners who are consciously standing behind this idea. ORGANIXtex is therefore distributed by carefully selected international partners, only. With Surfchimica Srl, hawo has had a close partnership for over ten years. The longestablished company from Peschiera Borromeo has been focusing on sustainable solutions and eco-friendly alternatives in the textile cleaning sector for many years.

Marco Vaccari and Roberto Castelli are always looking for new, innovative product ideas. Following this philosophy, Surfchimica is constantly looking for eco-sustainable raw materials that allow it to combine the highest quality yield with the lowest possible environmental impact. The highest achievement in this sense is the creation of the NAT line, a complete range of products for professional wet cleaning derived from raw materials of vegetable origin combined with surfactants of the same nature present within a maximum percentage of 5% in the formula.

This detail makes NAT products quickly and completely biodegradable and no danger warning is necessary on the label, in accordance with the EC Regulation 1272/2008 (CLP). Therefore, it is not foreseen, according to the art. 31 and 32 of the Reach regulation, the drawing of the safety data sheet, but only sending, along the supply chain, some useful information for the end user. In addition, there are standing out the results of the hypo allergenicity test carried out by the ISPE, Institute of Skin and Product Evaluation, recognized by the Ministry of University and Research, certifying that NAT WASH is totally hypoallergenic and non-irritating.
The tie that is binding the corporate philosophy of hawo and Surfchimica together, for completing a production chain that is eco-sustainable from the moment the garments are being washed and to the moment when they are returned packaged to the customer, is therefore evident. At a global level, it is a fact now that the plastic pollution has seriously compromised the environmental balance and that measures are being taken to gradually limit its use and production: in this sense, the ORGANIXtex system is a great opportunity for the entire “laundry” sector to work concretely to reduce the use of plastics in the
packaging process.
The topic is well known and often heard by the public opinion and we are sure that the laundry customer itself will be the first one to appreciate this innovative solution. •
